Roma have apologised for the offensive message that new signing Michel Bastos showed to the crowd during Tuesday's Coppa Italia game against Juventus.

The Brazilian winger was introduced to the Stadio Olimpico supporters and held up a scarf that carried the message 'Lazio merda' – translating to 'Lazio s***'.

A statement from Roma said: "Bastos has shown a scarf thrown by the fans without knowing the message it had.

"The club and Michel would like to apologise for what took place."

Bastos joined Roma earlier this week on loan from United Arab Emirates side Al Ain, who moved quickly to replace the 30-year-old by signing Ivorian midfielder Bakary Sare.

Bastos had only joined Al Ain in August 2013 but after making 15 appearances, and scoring three goals, he was allowed to make the move to Roma where he has been reunited with Rudi Garcia.

Meanwhile Roma, who progressed to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia after beating Juventus 1-0 last night in Rome, will next the winners of the quarter-final between Napoli and Lazio.
