AGL: Gabriel Calderon looking forward as Al Wasl prepare for final game at Zabeel Stadium

Boss Gabriel Calderon chose to look forward to a glorious future rather than dwell on the past as Al Wasl’s historic Zabeel Stadium prepares to host its final game with Friday’s visit of Emirates Club.

The Arabian Gulf League-contest will bring the curtain down on the ground, which officially opened in 1980.

The fourth-placed club will play their remaining home fixtures this term at Al Nasr’s Al Maktoum Stadium, as work gets under way on a new state-of-the-art 25,000 plus capacity venue which is set to open before the 2019 Asian Cup.

“I think this is nothing special for me, as all that is important is three points,” said the Argentine of the emotional fixture. “It is the last match at Zabeel Stadium, but I am very happy as it means we will be in a new stadium in the future.

“I am only happy about this. It is a very tough match against Emirates Club. It is a very important time for everybody.”

Meanwhile, Al Ahli boss Cosmin Olaroiu has dismissed talk that hitting top spot will pile the pressure on his troops.

The Red Knights dethroned champions Al Ain during the previous round. This means the 2013/14 winners are setting the pace for the first time since the early weeks of the season ahead of the trip to sinking Dibba Al Fujairah.

He said: “It’s the first time I think of it this way. The most important thing is to win the game.”

Relegation-rivals Sharjah and Fujairah also clash tomorrow at Sharjah Stadium, as well as AFC Champions League-chasing Al Wahda hosting bottom-placed Al Shaab.
