Former UEFA president Michel Platini has denied being arrested after French police detained him for questioning about his role in the controversial awarding of World Cup 2022 to Qatar.

Platini, 63, has been consistent in never denying voting for the Middle Eastern bid, while rejecting all claims of wrongdoing about the process. The former France and Juventus midfielder was quizzed in a Parisian suburb about the contentious issue on Tuesday morning.

France’s financial prosecutor’s office, the Parquet National Financier, has been investigating since 2016 the December 2010 decision to stage the tournament in Qatar.
