Argentina football legend Diego Maradona is recovering in hospital after undergoing a successful operation to stop internal bleeding caused by a hernia.

The 58-year-old icon’s condition was discovered during a routine check-up this month and he went under the knife on Saturday.

Following the news of his successful operation, legendary Brazilian footballer Pele sent his counterpart his best wishes.

The 78-year-old tweeted: “Hey Diego. I never like to hear that a member of the #10 Club is unwell. I hope you feel better soon, my friend.”

Maradona, who won the 1986 World Cup as captain of Argentina, will return to Mexican second division side Dorados de Sinaloa, where he is head coach, once his recuperation is complete.
