The head of the Asian Football Confederation hailed "an important moment for Asia" Thursday after a FIFA investigation cleared Qatar of any wrongdoing during bidding for the 2022 World Cup.

Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, a staunch supporter of the first World Cup to be held in the Middle East, said the region now had a chance to make history.

"There are matters to be ironed out of course including the timing of the World Cup, but we are committed to get it done," the Bahraini said in a statement.

"I would also like to call upon all Asian nations to continue showing support for Qatar as we have been doing since they won the bid. "This is an important moment for Asia, and we have a wonderful opportunity to create history."

Shaikh Salman's remarks come after the ethics committee of world body FIFA ruled out a revote for hosting the 2018 and 2022 World Cups following concerns over the bid processes.
