Lionel Messi may not see the pitch when Barcelona meet Celta Vigo tonight, with Ernesto Valverde admitting he could rest the star forward.

The La Liga leaders visit Vigo as they attempt to remain unbeaten in the league this season, but an encounter with Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final looms on Saturday.

Ivan Rakitic will be out with a broken finger, while Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique are expected to be rested.

“There’s a possibility that [Messi] rests, as is the case with other players,” Valverde said.

“But there’s nothing to worry about. He performed very well last week and I don’t know what to say. They should be calm in Argentina. It’s a long way to go before the World Cup.”
