India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was yesterday named as co-owner of Indian Super League club Chennaiyin FC.

Chennaiyin, whose team features former Italian international Marco Materrazzi and France defender Mikael Silvestre, will compete in the forthcoming ISL which kicks off on Sunday.

Dhoni, who led India to World Cup glory in 2011 and Chennai Super Kings to two IPL and two Champions League crowns, was a goalkeeper as a schoolboy before concentrating on cricket.

He said: “I always enjoy playing and watching the game. I wanted to be associated with football so when the opportunity came to be a part of Chennaiyin FC I was ecstatic.”
