Leicester made history again as Kelechi Iheanacho became the first player in English football to score a goal via a video assistant referee decision on Tuesday night.

Iheanacho scored in each half of their 2-0 FA Cup win over Fleetwood but it was his second strike 13 minutes from time that required the intervention.

Referee Jonathan Moss asked to check if the striker was offside before finishing off Riyad Mahrez’s lovely reverse pass.

Replays showed Iheanacho was onside when the ball was played and the goal stood as Leicester brushed off their League One opponents and booked a fourth-round tie away at Peterborough.

“I think we saw in the situation that it was important,” said Leicester boss Claude Puel.

“It was a good thing for us. The video is not perfect because we should have had free-kicks for fouls on (Vicente) Iborra but for the goal it was good.”

Fleetwood manager Uwe Rosler said: “For me, can they really say he is onside for the second goal or are they guessing? VAR is not 100 per cent clear because we still don’t see everything.”

West Ham also avoided an upset, albeit in less convincing fashion as they needed extra-time to edge past Shrewsbury with a 1-0 victory.

Reece Burke struck in the 112th minute at the London Stadium but it was the absent Andy Carroll, and the striker’s future, that took centre stage after the match.

Carroll is reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea this month but David Moyes denied West Ham are prepared to listen to offers.

“They’ve not made contact with me. If they’ve made contact with someone else I don’t know about it,” Moyes said.

“Andy Carroll is part of my squad. I want to add to my squad, not lose anybody.”

Elsewhere, Championship side Cardiff secured a fourth round meeting with Manchester City after they strolled to a 4-1 win over League Two outfit Mansfield.

Sheffield Wednesday beat Carlisle 2-0 and will now face Reading, who ran out 3-0 winners at home to Stevenage.

West Ham will await either Bournemouth or Wigan, who play their replay on Wednesday, along with Chelsea and Norwich, and Swansea and Wolves.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said on Tuesday he was not aware of his club entering the bidding for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.

Asked if the Premier League champions were actively seeking to sign Sanchez, Conte said: “I don’t know, but I don’t think so.”
