Liverpool and Chelsea target Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is unlikely to sign a deal with Arsenal despite getting an extended first-team role, according to the Telegraph.

The 24-year-old’s current contract expires next summer and boss Arsene Wenger had hoped he would sign an extension with the club reportedly offering more than £100,000 per week.

However, according to the report, Oxlade-Chamberlain wants to seek more opportunities in his preferred central midfield role having deployed in a wing-back position to begin the season.

Neither Liverpool or Chelsea have made a formal offer but may still do so before the window closes next Thursday.

Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis will reportedly continue discussions over a new deal with Oxlade-Chamberlain tomorrow in the hope they do not see him leave this summer or next on a free.

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are also entering the final years of their contracts but Wenger said last week of the trio: “We always hope, even now, that we can extend the contracts of [Alexis] Sanchez, Chamberlain and [Mesut] Ozil.

“I rate him [Chamberlain] highly and he’s one of the players who is on his way up. In the last year, he has made huge progress and I want him to stay here for a long time.

“I’m convinced he will be the English player that everybody will look at in the next two years.”
