The UEFA Champions League is widely regarded as the premier competition in club football. But is this sentiment misplaced?

In South America, playing in the Copa Libertadores is the pinnacle of many players’ careers. Back in 2010, there were Santos players who turned down moves to Chelsea and Olympique Lyon in order to play in the continent’s famous inter-country club contest.

Former Portuguese star Deco, who won two Champions League trophies with Barcelona, went as far as to say that he would exchange both of those triumphs for Copa Libertadores success.
