Sam Allardyce’s straight-talking style helped land him the England manager’s job, but just 67 days later it has cost him the dream role he coveted for years.

Allardyce, known as “Big Sam”, was secretly filmed by The Daily Telegraph giving advice on how to circumnavigate transfer rules and mocking the speech impediment of predecessor Roy Hodgson.

And Allardyce paid the ultimate price for his out-spoken comments as the Football Association felt compelled to part company with the 61-year-old by mutual consent on Tuesday.

With his position now vacant, here are five candidates who could be in the frame to replace the departed Allardyce.

EDDIE HOWE

The Bournemouth boss recently described managing England as ‘the ultimate job’ and was considered before Allardyce was appointed. The 38-year-old has done an incredible job with the Cherries over two spells.

ALAN PARDEW

He’s stated in the past his desire to take on the Three Lions post and although he’s had his fair share of controversial moments, the Crystal Palace boss is an established and respected Premier League manager.

GARETH SOUTHGATE

The England Under-21 boss is a common sense short-term replacement. Has been part of the Three Lions coaching set-up since 2013 and won the Toulon Tournament for the first time in two decades.

STEVE BRUCE

Not the most glamorous name but if the FA are looking for an English manager he will no doubt be considered again after he was interviewed for the post following Roy Hodgson’s exit.

ARSENE WENGER

Undoubtedly the best candidate but also the most difficult with the EPL season under way. Has helped change the face of English football during two decades with Arsenal.
