Gamal, 25, was left with a stomach wound following the attack, which occurred after Ahly fans broke into the stadium to interrupt a session.

The supporters are reported to have targeted the players and coaches following the team’s poor recent run of form, which included an Egyptian Cup final loss to bitter rivals Zamalek and an exit from the CAF Champions League.

Egyptian media reported that Gamal’s team-mate Hossam Ghaly was also attacked.

Ahly club doctor Khaled Mahmoud confirmed Gamal had been hurt, but played down the extent of his injury, telling reporters: “Amro Gamal is injured, but there is no cause for concern.

“Captain Hossam Ghaly and a few others in the team have also suffered from small scratches in their hands and necks.”
