Sam Allardyce to be named England manager: From ‘out-tacticking’ Jose Mourinho to busting a move to Rihanna – Five Big Sam moments

Sam Allardyce is set to be named England manager.

The Sunderland boss was disappointed to miss out on the job previously but following another poor showing from the national side at a major tournament when they crashed out of Euro 2016 to minnows Iceland, the FA are prepared to give ‘Big Sam’ his shot.

Allardyce has never won a major honour but is no slouch in front of the tactics board and is always spoken well of by his players.

However, like any good manager, he’s got a lot of character as well. Here, we take a look at five standout Allardyce moments.

NONE OF THAT TIPPY-TAPPY STUFF

Roy Hodgson focused considerably on possession football but to little effect and while Allardyce has his own blueprint for success, it’s safe to say he won’t want his side messing about around the centre-circle.

‘OUT-TACTICKING’ JOSE MOURINHO

In January 2014, then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was frustrated after playing out a draw with Allardyce’s West Ham United side. The Portuguese accused the Hammers of playing ’19th century football’. Allardyce responded, claiming they ‘out-tacticked’ The Special One.

PARTYING TO RHIANNA IN MARBELLA

Once again, Allardyce emerged from a relegation scrap as top dog. He miraculously steered a Sunderland side that looked destined for the drop clear off danger. Can you blame him for getting a little freaky on holiday then? Well deserved Sam!

GETTING A LITTLE TOO MUCH ADORATION FROM RUSSELL BRAND

Following a 2-1 win over defending champions Manchester City in October 2014, Allardyce was attacked by an adoring fan in a post-match interview. The West Ham supporter in question was British comedian Russell Brand.

MOCKING CHICO FLORES

Allardyce doesn’t take too kindly to theatrics on the football pitch and on this occasion he chose to ridicule Swansea City defender Chico Flores for play-acting. Needless to say, the Spaniard wasn’t impressed.
