Belgium sack national team coach Marc Wilmots: Three coaches who could replace him

Belgium have parted company with their coach Marc Wilmots after a Euro 2016 quarter-final elimination to Wales fell short of expectations.

With top quality players throughout the side, hopes for Europe’s top-rated team were sky high going into the competition in France.

In 51 matches at the helm Wilmots oversaw 34 wins, nine defeats and eight draws.

Here, we look at who could replace him as Belgium’s national team coach.

LOUIS VAN GAAL

Although he is a Dutchman, his success leading the Netherlands to third place at World Cup 2014 will make him of interest to Belgium.

Granted, his time with Manchester United was a failure despite winning the FA Cup but perhaps catering to players he doesn’t have a whole lot of time to work with suits him now.

Thoughts of  enforcing his philosophy can be cast aside and he can focus on finding the best way to win.

MICHEL PREUD’HOMME

The legendary ex-Belgium goalkeeper has earned a solid reputation as a trophy-winning coach. Club Brugge would be loathe to let him go.

He’s an accomplished manager at club level but has never had to work with the kind of superstars that the Belgium team have within its ranks.

The fact that he’s never managed at international level is also a slight stumbling block.

HEIN VANHAEZEBROUCK

The 52-year-old lifted the Belgian First Division title with KAA Gent in 2014/15, but has refused to be drawn about the national job.

Like Preud’homme, he too lacks experience in terms of dealing with high-profile players and working in the international circuit.

It may be worth bringing in someone with a fresh approach though.
