USA vs Argentina: Five talking points ahead of the Copa America semi-final

USA have impressed in their Copa America bow but they will now face Argentina who began the tournament as firm favourites.

Jurgen Klinsmann has already achieved his target of reaching the last four, but can his USA side go even further?

We take a look at the main topics of discussion ahead of the semi-final clash…

CAN THE HOSTS STOP ARGENTINA’S ATTACK?

La Albiceleste boss Gerardo Martino has an embarrassment of riches in the attacking areas. Lionel Messi’s return has been managed superbly, Angel Di Maria is back in the fold after injury and their squad is so deep that Sergio Aguero has to be content with a substitute role. Oh, and Gonzalo Higuain leads the line. That will take some stopping.

CAN DEMPSEY CONTINUE TO FIRE?

This tournament seemed like an opportunity for newcomers Darlington Nagbe and Christian Pulisic to shine but the old guard are the ones carrying the fight. At 33, Clint Dempsey is arguably the player of the Copa with three goals and two assists and the USA need him now more than ever.

WILL ABSENTEES COST USA?

Suspensions have put Jurgen Klinsmann in an awkward position. Jermaine Jones is banned as are Alejandro Bedoya and Bobby Wood. Three key players which will force the USA boss to shuffle his pack.

CAN MASCHERANO MASK ARGENTINA’S DEFENCE FRAILTIES?

Venezuela enjoyed some success against Argentina’s back-four before half-time in the quarter-final clash and the USA should have their moments. Once again a midfield role at a major tournament has brought the best out of Javier Mascherano and his power and aggression will be key to Le Albiceleste keeping it tight.

WILL KLINSMANN FINALLY BE RELIEVED OF PRESSURE?

USA have struggled in the 18 months post-World Cup and the opening loss to Colombia fuelled talk the German could soon be heading for an exit. His tactical acumen has been questioned in the past but he’s got key decisions right at this Copa. A spot in the final could alleviate the pressure entirely.
