Outspoken Verheijen blasts ‘dinosaur’ Man Utd boss Moyes

13:07 04/12/2013

Respected Dutch coach Raymond Verheijen has taken another swipe at Manchester United boss David Moyes after the club’s worst start to a season since 1989-90.

United’s 2-1 home defeat to West Brom means the Premier League champions have picked up just seven points from their opening six games and are already EIGHT behind leaders Arsenal.

erheijen, the former assistant manager of the Welsh national team, is known on Twitter for his outspoken nature on tactics and player development.

The 41-year-old, who specialises in fitness and player conditioning, has had stints coaching with the national teams of the Netherlands, South Korea and Russia, whilst also advising some of Europe’s top clubs, including Feyenoord in 2011.

Verheijen has branded Moyes a ‘football dinosaur’ in the past through references to the famous Hollywood movie ‘Jurassic Park’ to describe the coaching in English football.

And the Dutchman was scathing again in his assessment of Moyes in the wake of United’s defeat to West Brom with the champions now going over 450 minutes without a goal in the league from open play.

He tweeted: “It was sad to see ‘Rugby United’ lose against WBA today. Every time RVP does not come to the rescue, United look like a very average team.

“As RVP was struggling with muscle problems for second time already this season, United had to do it without him for most of the game.

“When coaching a smaller club like Everton one can play reactive football to frustrate opponent and to win many points with good counter play.

“However, when coaching a big club like United it’s the opponent who’s playing reactive football & it’s up to manager to come up with solution.

“That’s why a lot of managers struggle when they move from a small to a big club. They don’t understand how to break down a defensive wall.

“Another problem is the fact that Moyes is very rigid with his 4-4-2. This is a very vulnerable tactic, especially against 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1.”

The Dutchman went on: “Despite the 4-1 win, everyone who understands football could already see United’s tactical problem in the Swansea game last month.

“In [the] Swansea game, United played with two central midfielders against three Swansea midfielders. But in that particular game, RVP came to the rescue.

“As most people in Jurassic Park don’t have a clue about tactics, they were all talking about the 4-1 win instead of the tactical blunder.

“Even the tactically clueless pundits of Match of the Day said United had played well. What can you expect of these Jurassic Park products?

“In the Manchester derby the same tactical blunder proved to be very costly as Carrick and Fellani were totally overrun by the City midfielders.”

But as his rant continued, he criticised the former Everton manager for ditching countryman René Meulensteen, a long-term ally of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

“The future doesn’t look bright as Moyes was allowed to take with him his tactically clueless friends from Everton and released Fergie’s staff.” Verheijen continued.

“It might have been smart if he had kept one of Fergie’s coaches as they know the team and understand how to deal with the opponent’s tactics.

“Former coach Meulensteen would have had more to offer to United than all the current clueless and inexperienced nobodies on the United bench.”
