Popular Forty’s League in Dubai is helping veteran cricketers in the UAE flourish

A group of 60 cricketers are proving that age is no barrier when it comes to playing the game in the UAE. While it’s rare to find cricketers who play beyond 40, that isn’t the case in Dubai.

Late last year, the Dubai Cricket Council (DCC) formed the Forty’s League, giving the opportunity for veterans to play in a competitive tournament. It didn’t take long for word to spread of the new competition, with DCC, Alubond Cool and Cool, Fly Emirates Seniors, and Dubai Mammoth all taking part in the on-going four-team event.

“The Dubai Cricket Council members just had a conversation between ourselves saying there were many players out there who wanted to play cricket at a high level for those over 40,” explained Shiva Pagarani, DCC member.

“We just thought we would create a tournament and see how it goes. So far it has turned out to be a big success. It just took 10 days to put everything into plan from the idea until the first match.”

He added: “There was nothing like this in the UAE before. In their good old days, the cricketers used to play a lot in the UAE against people roughly their own age. It’s still possible to do so now, but it’s difficult.

“In this league, players will come up against someone of the same standard whether they’re bowling or batting.”

Occupations of the players include pilots and chartered accountants but they still find time to play the sport they love. Held at the Sevens Cricket Grounds, according to Pagarani, it has opened “a new door” for veterans.

“They are very happy because there’s a new door open for them. It’s a high-standard league,” said the 43-year-old, who plays for DCC.

The competition has already provided some thrilling contests and to ensure players don’t take it lightly, DCC have lined up various awards including best bowler, batsman and man of the series.

“Every player is taking the league seriously. It’s a league that any team would want to win,” said Pagarani. “At the same time, it’s a mixture of pleasure and players keeping fit.

“To be playing top-level cricket there has to be competition otherwise there is no enjoyment at all. The zest of enjoyment is not there if you’re calling it a friendly game.”

The Yogi Group owner isn’t surprised the league has been a success and predicts it will grow rapidly in the future.

“From the Dubai Cricket Council’s view, we are looking to invite two more teams for the next edition. There are a lot of players who are really keen on playing and we may even hold the league twice a year,” he said.
