Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth hopes he’s done enough to impress England Test captain Alastair Cook after scoring a century against his MCC side in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Lyth, called up to the Test squad for next month’s tour to West Indies, was in fine form with the bat, hitting 12 fours in his 113-run knock.

Observing every run from first slip was Cook, who scored just three as he looks to get back into form for the new season. With places up for grabs for the First Test in Antigua on April 13, Lyth hopes his efforts haven’t gone unnoticed.

“It feels great to start the season off with a hundred and am pleased to have done it in front of the England captain,” said the 27-year-old.

“To score the century in front of the captain and with England picking the side in a few weeks time hopefully I’ve impressed him.”

At close of play at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Cook was unbeaten on two in his second innings as MCC reached 12-0, still 138 runs behind as Yorkshire posted 372 in the Champion County match.

On a gloomy day in the capital, Lyth and Steven Patterson picked up where they had left off on Sunday. The duo’s 91-run partnership finally came to an end as Patterson (36) was clean bowled by all-rounder Adam Riley.

The MCC were soon celebrating again as Jonny Bairstow (0) was trapped lbw by Chris Rushworth. Lyth was next to go, but Will Rhodes (61) and Andy Hodd (57) piled on the runs. Their 104-run stand was halted by Matt Dunn, who removed Hodd while Rhodes soon followed.
