The 37-year-old began his stint yesterday and will continue through to October 10, overseeing all training sessions and the practice match against West Indies at Dubai’s ICC Academy, to be played on October 3-4.

Shah is no stranger to the team, having worked as a batting consultant for five days before their matches against Scotland last month.

ECB chief selector and board member, Waleed Bukhatir said: “Owais worked with the senior Men’s players in Hampshire, ahead of their Scotland campaign, and has built a strong understanding of their current playing abilities.

“We are confident this interim appointment will enable him to continue the work he began, ensuring their programme continues uninterrupted.”

He brings in a vast amount of knowledge, having scored 25,000 runs in all formats during his 17-year career.
