Their journey began in March when the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) launched their first-ever Talent Hunt, with the aim of identifying players with potential who could possibly play for the UAE in the future. Around 60 were shortlisted from the opening round before numbers were reduced over four stages, which included net sessions held by the ECB selectors and attended by former UAE captains Khurram Khan and Mohammed Tauqir. Fast-bowler Matir Ullah was among the players to make his case, taking three wickets in the practice match at Dubai’s ICC Academy. The 23-year-old, who hails from Pakistan, admits it has been quite a challenge.

“It’s been quite hard and it’s not easy to play for the UAE, you have to go and prove yourself,” he said.

“But I’m just staying focused, performing well and hope that I can play for the UAE one day.”

According to ECB national development manager Andy Russell, there’s no time frame to the end of this process but those who impressed in the match will also be closely monitored for their clubs too.

“We will cut down the shortlist and no there is no specific number,” said the South African.

“It was important how they play in matches, how they approach things, which was why we wanted to see them play.

“The selectors will want to see them at their best when the new season begins before taking the next step forward.”
