Shaiman Anwar’s half-century was not enough to save the UAE as the tourists fell to a seven-wicket defeat to Scotland on Tuesday.

The UAE vice-captain top-scored for his side with 63 but his team-mates struggled with the bat and were all-out for 228 in their World Cricket League Championship clash.

Paul Franks’ side fought back with the hosts at 43-2 inside eight overs but a 165-run partnership between Calum Macleod (103) and captain Preston Mommsen (80*) set the platform for a second successive victory.

Despite an encouraging start, Franks admits the stand ultimately proved to be the difference.

“Yes, that was the difference,” said the Englishman. “We were unable to do that. We had small partnerships at some parts which cost us dear and never got back into the game.”

It is the second limited-overs loss for the UAE on their tour of Scotland and they now remain rooted to the bottom of the eight-team standings with just one win from eight matches.

Former England international Franks had no complaints in defeat, saying Scotland fully deserved the win.

“Not just in this game but we’ve fallen short on this tour,” said the 37-year-old.

“We were outplayed by a very solid and professional Scotland team who have been more ruthless with the bat.

“We’ve not been prepared to work hard to put ourselves into a good position. We had that position today and could not take advantage and  Scotland were more ruthless.”
