The UAE coach, who will step down at the end of this month after four years in charge, put pen to paper on a two-year contract in Lahore last week and will take up the Director Cricket Operations role for the Pakistan Super League outfit.

The former Pakistani fast-bowler has emerged as one of the favourites to replace Waqar Younis, who resigned after a miserable World Twenty20 campaign last month.

But the 43-year-old insists his long-term focus is on making Lahore Qalandars, who finished last in this season’s edition in the UAE, a formidable force.

“I’m not really interested in that (Pakistan head coach) job,” he said, who will be joined by UAE batting consultant and former Test batsman Mudassar Nazar, who has been appointed as the team’s ‘icon’.

“I’ve already signed a contract with Lahore Qalandars and I’ll be there to help them and be at the academies to find new talent and groom players.”

He added: “There will be other opportunities where I can do other things throughout the year. I will definitely push for something where I can work in different T20 leagues around the world as a consultant during the other months.

“It will be very challenging role and it will be good to help them become champions one day.”
