Ibrahim Riaz inspired Deira Dare­devils Under-13s to an opening victory – despite only undergoing heart surgery three months ago.

The 12-year-old played with flair and confidence as his 24 from just 18 balls concluded the Daredevils’ successful chase in their victory over TMS Amateurs.

Riaz said: “From birth, I’ve had VSD, which means I have a hole in my heart and I had to get it oper­ated on.

“I had to have it closed up. I didn’t know an operation was going to happen three months ago.”

“For the first two months after the surgery, it was hard, but I’ve gotten back into things now. It’s been a slow process but I’m fully recovered.

“I’m back playing and feeling good and healthy. I’m just delighted with the team and to play in such a great game.”

Others to impress for Deira were Aman Ahlani and Mohammad Dan­ish Mohammed Raza – who both cut imposing figures throughout.

According to Deira coach Jay Tostevin, schools have been crying out for a new competition like this. “It’s an absolutely brilliant compe­tition to have,” he said.

“We’ve needed something like this. The fact that it’s well organised makes it more professional for the players.

“It’s only going to increase player aspirations and work to the benefit of UAE cricket itself.”

In Friday’s other match, DPS Falcons got their campaign off to a great start, beating DC Sixers by 23 runs.

Stand out players for the Falcons were Vivek Aditya and man-of-the-match Aryan Lakra – who were in­volved in a century partnership for the opening wicket.

Lakra’s all-around game was su­perb and his 58 alongside a half-century from Aditya proved decisive.

Falcon’s coach Prosanta Chanda believes the new League will only encourage more players to get involved in the sport at the school level.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for the players in the UAE. It’s a great platform at this age,” said Chanda.

“There’s a good crowd here to­day which underlines the League’s popularity. It’s great for the players too.”

Despite finishing on the losing side, Eisa Hussain and the Saad Ali were spectacular throughout for the Sixers.
