Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni has been fined 50 per cent of his match fee for remonstrating against the match officials’ decision on the field during his side’s tense win over Rajasthan Royals on Thursday.

In the final over of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash held at Jaipur, Dhoni stormed into the field to protest an umpiring decision before his side ultimately prevailed by four wickets.

Dhoni was bowled by Ben Stokes off the third delivery of the final over before controversy erupted during the next ball. The England all-rounder bowled a high full-toss at new batsman Mitchell Santner, leading umpire Ulhas Gandhe to promptly signal for a no-ball for height.

However, square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford overruled his colleague’s decision causing Dhoni to storm onto the pitch to signal his protest.

Chennai ultimately scored the 18 runs required to win off the final over with Santner smashing a last-ball six. At the end of the game, CSK coach Stephen Fleming admitted that Dhoni’s actions will be questioned for some time to come while Rajasthan Royals batsman Jos Buttler too was confused by the veteran wicketkeeper’s antics.

“I am not sure if that’s the right thing to do,” Buttler was quoted as saying by AFP.

“Obviously tensions are running high in the IPL and every run counts. It was a big moment in the game but whether stepping onto the pitch is quite right, probably not,” the Englishman added.

The loss left Rajasthan languishing in second-last spot in the IPL table while Chennai maintained their firm grip on top spot with what was their sixth win in seven games.
