For the first time in its history, the Indian Premier League is set to introduce a mid-season transfer window.

The tournament has approached its half-way mark and there remain many overseas and local stars who have been struggling for game time. The window could come as a boost for these players and provide them with a new lease of life.

Many struggling teams will have also identified their weaknesses and the transfer window could be the perfect chance to address those deficiencies. The IPL mid-season transfer is set to run between Match 28 and Match 42 of the tournament. That means, in theory, that it comes into effect after Sunday’s clash between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad. It will end with the meeting between Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 10.

Here, we look at how the transfer window works.

  • Both capped and uncapped players will be eligible for a transfer
  • In the case of capped players, only those players who have played less than two matches at the half-way mark are eligible for a transfer
  • In the case of uncapped players, all of them remain eligible for the transfer
  • Both concerned franchises and the player have to agree for the transfer to go ahead

With this being the first-ever transfer window in the IPL, it remains to be seen how active teams are during this period. Taking the rules into effect, the likes of Alex Hales, JP Duminy, Moeen Ali and Ish Sodhi will all be eligible for a transfer during the short window.
