Former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag has been appointed as the head of Cricket Operations and Strategy for the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).

KXIP, who have finished at the bottom of the Indian Premier League (IPL) table over the last two seasons, are hopeful that Sehwag in his new role will be able to turn things around.

Sanjay Bangar had recently quit as the franchise’s coach, bringing an end to his three-year tenure.

“It is such an honour to lead this team and mentor our young talent. Kings XI Punjab is a team very close to my heart and I am looking forward to a great season with them,” said Sehwag.

Sehwag was bought by the Punjab-based franchise in 2014 and played two seasons for them. He was part of the backroom staff as a mentor last season.
