When young Virat Kohli offered to sit out of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s playing eleven

Kohli’s rise has been truly spectacular. After leading India’s U-19 team to a World Cup win, the right-hander was picked up by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

And while Kohli is now the captain of the side, he wasn’t too pleased with his batting position when he first joined the red and gold brigade.

In an interesting revelation, he has claimed to have told the RCB management to leave him out of the side if they weren’t going to promote him up the order.

Kohli’s logic was simple; he felt he wasn’t doing justice to his batting position at the time.

To deliver improved results Virat felt he needed to move up the order. He went on to convey this to the management and the matter was swiftly dealt with.

“I addressed that (with the team management) and they understood that I want to bat up the order because I can contribute more to the team. Because I wasn’t doing justice to the position I was playing in, I told them ‘you can leave me out because I don’t think I am able to do much at the spot you are making me play. Someone else may be able to do the job better’,” the 27-year-old was quoted as saying in a Mid-Day report.

Having represented the franchise since 2008, Kohli belongs to a select group of players to have played for just one team since the IPL’s inception.

Now that Kohli gets to bat at a position of his liking, he will want to end the eight-year trophy drought at the Bengaluru-based team.
