Mohammad Amir is “eligible” to play international cricket again after completing his rehabilitation and re-education programme following his role in the spot-fixing scandal in 2010, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board.

However, the PCB has stressed that any final decision over his controversial return to the Pakistan team rests with the selectors.

The left-arm fast bowler had a spell in prison and was handed a five-year ban after bowling deliberate no-balls during Pakistan’s last tour of England.

Amir, now 23, returned to competitive cricket earlier this year and has shown flashes of form in domestic first-class cricket and the Bangladesh Premier League, while he was named in the ongoing 26-man fitness training camp organised by the PCB.

A PCB statement said: “After serving his sentence the ICC allowed Amir to resume his cricket career at all levels. Nevertheless, PCB insisted on Amir going through a further rehabilitation programme for six months.

“Amir completed this programme which comprised lectures to junior teams warning them against corruption, sessions with psychologists and with senior players.

“Accordingly, Amir has been called to the fitness camp which will enable him to bond with national players. His selection for the national team, for which he is eligible, would depend on the selectors.”
