Former England batsman Marcus Trescothick is set to join the team’s coaching setup for the first two Tests of the upcoming Ashes series against Australia.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the 43-year-old will accompany the England team in training and at the hotel in the lead up to the Edgbaston and Lord’s Test matches.

Trescothick’s appointment comes in the wake of Jonathan Trott performing a similar role for England in the lead up to the Lord’s Test against Ireland which begins on Wednesday.

The former England opener is currently undertaking his final season in professional cricket with Surrey and is set to hang up his playing boots after a distinguished first-class career that saw him make his debut in 1993.

The left-hander played 76 Tests for England before retiring from international cricket in 2006 but has continued to graft it out at the first-class level for Surrey. Trescothick has so far amassed more than 26,000 runs after playing 391 first-class matches while registering 66 centuries in the process.

The opening batsman was also a part of the England squad which famously captured the Ashes series on home soil in 2005. He is now expected to help assist England’s batsmen prepare for the Ashes series with the team currently without a full-time batting coach.

The first Ashes Test between England and Australia at Edgbaston begins on August 1 with the clash also officially kickstarting the inaugural ICC World Test Championship.
