Legendary pacer Waqar Younis believes the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been instrumental in the rise of the national team’s fortunes in the T20 format.

Pakistan have been the undisputed No1 team in the T20 format since more than a year now with Sarfraz Ahmed and his men winning a record 11 series on the bounce before their juggernaut was halted in South Africa recently.

Waqar, who is currently serving as the team president of Islamabad United in the 2019 edition of the PSL, feels the T20 tournament has played a significant role since its inception in 2016.

“I think if you look at the shorter version, you feel there are significant improvements and that are mainly due to the PSL,” the former Pakistan pacer was quoted as saying by The News International.

“Every PSL throws some good talent, there are some good players who have come to the fore from Islamabad United,” he added.

Shadab Khan is one of several youngsters to emerge from the PSL.

Since its launch in 2016, the PSL has been getting bigger with each passing player and as many as eight matches of the ongoing edition are slated to be held on Pakistan soil.

The Pakistan legend feels that the PSL has already established itself as one of the top T20 leagues across the globe and believes it will only get better going forward.

“Currently it’s (PSL) in the top-three. Of course, IPL is at the top, there is no doubt. PSL is getting bigger and better. The need is that one day it should fully be staged in Pakistan,” Waqar stated.

“Once it is fully staged in Pakistan, it will probably become one of the biggest leagues. This time we have eight matches in Pakistan, next year, may be, we have more than half matches in Pakistan.

“The things are rolling and in the next three years we will have the full league in Pakistan.”
