Half-centuries from Shakib Al Hasan and debutant Shadman Islam helped Bangladesh post 259-5 in the opening day of their second Test against the West Indies in Dhaka.

Shakib was unbeaten on 55 with skipper Mahmudullah (31) for company when stumps were drawn at the Shere Bangla National stadium on Friday.

It was a steady batting performance on day one for the hosts with debutant Shadman putting on a 42-run opening stand with Soumya Sarkar (19) before the latter was dismissed by Roston Chase.

Bangladesh lost a second wicket off the penultimate delivery before lunch when Mominul Haque (29) miscued a pull shot against Kemar Roach.

Shadman then added a solid 64 runs for the third wicket along with Mohammad Mithun (29) as he brought up his maiden half-century before the pair fell in quick succession. West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo ended the debutant’s stay at the crease after trapping him lbw.

An unbeaten half-century from Shakib Al Hasan.

Mushfiqur Rahim (14) failed to create a big impact even as he went past the 4,000-run mark in Test cricket with the wicketkeeper/batsman being castled by Shermon Lewis.

Following the fall of Mushfiqur, Shakib and Mahmudullah came together at the crease and the duo stitched together a promising, unbeaten stand of 69 runs before the day’s play drew to a close.

Bangladesh currently lead 1-0 in the two-match series after attaining a 64-run win in the opening Test at Chattogram.
