Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel clinched his third five-wicket haul in five innings as the West Indies thrashed Bangladesh by an innings and 219 runs on the third day of the first Test in Antigua on Friday.

Gabriel went wicketless in the first innings as Bangladesh were bowled out for their lowest Test total of 43 but was on target in the second innings with four wickets by stumps on Day Two.

The 30-year-old fast bowler dismissed Kamrul Islam when play resumed to end up with figures of 5-77 as the Tigers were bowled out for 144 as the hosts registered their biggest innings win in the Caribbean.

Earlier, Bangladesh wicketkeeper Nurul Islam hit 64 – his first Test fifty. Nurul reached his half-century from just 36 balls, the fastest-ever by a Bangladesh player in a Test away from home.

Seamer Miguel Cummins finished the innings as he had Nurul caught and bowled before shattering the stumps of Rubel Hossain in the next over.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan admitted his team has a lot of work to do.

“We need to adapt better to these conditions,” Hasan said. “It is not something we are familiar with but we have to spend the next five days getting ready for a similar situation when the next Test begins.”

The second and final Test of the series starts on July 12 in Jamaica where another green deck is expected.

“We were disappointed after losing the last Test of the series against Sri Lanka a week ago so that gave us some additional motivation,” said West Indies skipper Jason Holder regarding his team’s defeat in Barbados.

“We needed to be a little more clinical in the second innings but I am looking now to us setting the tone again for the second Test.”
