Asad Shafiq made an unbeaten 41 from 116 deliveries, and his mid-order stand with Younis Khan took 23.4 overs out of the New Zealand bowlers.

The in-form Sarfraz Ahmed came in and hit 24 runs as he and Shafiq played out 11.3 overs before both sides decided to call off the match with half an hour left of play.

Play was unlikely to have lasted much longer with light fading, with an hour-long lunch break having being taken on account of Friday prayers.

New Zealand declared an hour before lunch 260 runs ahead and made quick inroads into Pakistan in their search to bowl the hosts out.

Tim Southee had Taufeeq Umar caught behind before Azhar Ali played a Mark Craig full toss straight to extra cover for 24.

Masood was dismissed for 40 runs after a peach of a delievery from Trent Boult caught the batsman LBW.

Boult continued to make inroads into the Pakistan top order after luring Misbah-ul-Haq into a shot that resulted in a thin edge to the wicketkeeper.

Younis and Shafiq then took charge of the Pakistan innings and played with discipline and played aggressively against the New Zealand spinners.

Pakistan stuttered to make just 32 runs off the next 14 overs but came out positively after lunch and attacked the bowling of Sodhi, who Masood hit for a four and a six.

Southee hit back at Azhar with some aggressive short deliveries and the batsman was almost forced into a mistake when he edged a swinging delivery just short of second slip.

Despite Ross Taylor’s earlier batting heroics to notch up his twelfth century but once Pakistan’s batmen decided the win was out of reach, a draw was the only outcome.
