Mercurial New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder seems at be at the crossroads of his professional career after failing to land a contract in the domestic cricket.

Ryder enjoyed an excellent last season, scoring 640 runs at an average of 71.11 with two hundreds and three fifties for Central Districts. However, Central Districts and others have decided to not seek his services in the first round of contracts.

“It was a very difficult decision not to offer Jesse a new contract, as we have appreciated his contribution to the team for the past three summers. However, ultimately, we have considered the balance of our squad and have elected to take a long-range view,” Central Districts chief executive Pete De Wet was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Herald.

“Jesse began his professional career for us in 2002-03, when he was a promising youngster at just 18. Later, after nine seasons representing the Wellington Firebirds and two seasons with the Otago Volts, we were delighted when his career came full circle in 2015-16 when we welcomed Jesse back.”

Ryder might look for opportunities outside New Zealand, including the Caribbean Premier League.

Ryder is one of the most talented batsmen produced by New Zealand but has struggled with disciplinary and alcohol-related issues over the years. He last played for New Zealand in 2014 before being seen at a bar that contravened the strict rules imposed on him by New Zealand management.

Ryder scored six centuries in international cricket and was a more than handy medium pacer.
