Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad sustained a fractured skull on the history-making second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.

Shehzad was hit on the head by a short delivery from Corey Anderson in the 116th over of the Pakistan innings.

He was out hit wicket owing to the impact, for 176, and taken in considerable pain for CT scans which revealed a minor fracture.

"The specialist surgeon has confirmed minor fracture and has advised 48 hours of close monitoring," said team manager Moin Khan. "In case the pain doesn't subside, then the surgeon may opt for decompression."

All five of Pakistan's top-five batsmen scored in excess of 80 for the first time in Test cricket and, with Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq also scoring centuries in an unbroken partnership of 193 for the fourth wicket, the home side declared on 566 for three.

New Zealand closed the day on 15-0 in their first innings.
