Steve Smith could be back on the cricket field in a month’s time at the inaugural Global Canada T20 in Toronto.

According to a report by cricket.com.au, the former Australia skipper has been approached by the organisers of the tournament.

Cricket Australia are understood to back the decision should Smith decide to accept the offer.

Smith was handed a 12-month suspension by Cricket Australia for the infamous ball-tampering episode in Australia’s tour of South Africa.

The 28-year-old is prohibited from playing any international, Big Bash League and state cricket.

The six-team Canada Global T20 has been sanctioned by the ICC in February and will be held from June 28 to July 16 in Toronto.

While Smith is poised for a return in the T20 league, his fellow suspended cricketers David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have been confirmed to return to the cricket field in recent days.

Smith had been handed a 12-month ban by Cricket Australia earlier.

Cameron Bancroft, the protagonist of the episode, has been granted special exemption from Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) to participate in the Premier Cricket competition for Willetton.

Smith’s former deputy David Warner has been confirmed to play for Sydney-based grade cricket club Randwick Petersham.

Both Smith and Warner were due to play in the IPL on mammoth contracts but have had to stay away following the outrage over the ball-tampering scandal.
