The Newlands Cricket Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa was the victim of an armed-robbery during the Easter weekend.

The venue, which hosted the recent third Test between South Africa and Australia, was at the receiving end of a robbery for the third time since 2015.

“Gun-wielding robbers raided Newlands Cricket Stadium just after midnight on Friday,” a statement from the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) said.

“The glass doors of about 25 suites were smashed and the robbers targeted the TVs while also taking some liquor and other items in the suites, whilst also vandalising some of the suites,” it added.

“The South African Police Services are busy with an extensive investigation into the event and we will also reassess our security measures, including the possibility of having more cameras installed,” the statement said.

The stadium had only recently hosted the third South Africa-Australia Test.

“As an Association we are disturbed by the robbery and will do our utmost with the help of the South African Police Services to get to the bottom of this and try and prevent a reoccurrence of this type of incident.

“We will seriously look within our budgetary constraints to improve our security situation at the stadium.”

According to the statement, a woman approached the stadium security asking for directions to a church.

She returned a few minutes later with three more men who jumped the security fences before being joined by 15 others. While there have been previous robberies at the picturesque cricket venue, this is the first time that it was an armed one.

The third Test between South Africa and Australia held at the venue recently had exploded into controversy after an admission of ball-tampering by the visitors.
