Cape Cobras registered their first win of the Champions League Twenty20 tournament with a super over victory over Barbados Tridents in Mohali yesterday.

In the super over, the South African team scored 11 runs off Ravi Rampaul and then saw their bowler Sybrand Engelbrecht restricting Barbados to 10 as Jonathan Carter, who had earlier scored a whirlwind 111 off 68 balls, failed to score a boundary off the final ball.

Earlier, a power-packed batting display from 26-year-old left-hander Carter helped Barbados reach 174-8 at the PCA Stadium. Carter smashed five sixes and 10 boundaries in a knock that held the innings together with only opener Dilshan Munaweera making the other notable contribution, scoring 42 from 21 balls.

In the chase, the Cobras added 56 runs in five overs for the opening wicket with Hashim Amla (59) and Richard Levi (39) steering the innings.

They were well placed at 99-1 in the 11th over before leg-spinner Jeevan Mendis turned the match on its head. The Sri Lankan spinner grabbed four wickets for 27 runs to have the Cobras suddenly at 143- 5.

But Engelbrecht stood up to the challenge. He hit a boundary and then took three consecutive twos from the final four balls bowled by Rayard Emrit to tie the scores and force the extra over. Engelbrecht was declared man of the match.
