England have lost their last seven Tests away from home, equalling their longest such run.

Ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, Press Association Sport looks back over the string of defeats.

India v England, 2016

Lost by 246 runs, Visakhapatnam, November 17

After an opening draw in Rajkot, Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara made hundreds in India’s first innings and Kohli added 81 in the second while Ravichandran Ashwin took eight wickets in the match as England were bowled out for 255 and 158.

Lost by eight wickets Mohali, November 26

India’s last four wickets added 213 in their first innings for a lead of 134 and after England were dismissed for 236, Parthiv Patel smashed 67 not out to see India comfortably to their small target.

Lost by an innings and 36 runs, Mumbai, December 8

Keaton Jennings’ century led England to exactly 400 in their first innings but after India responded with 631, Kohli making 235 with centuries also for Murali Vijay and tail-ender Jayant Yadav, England were skittled for 195 as Ashwin took six for 55.

Lost by an innings and 75 runs, Chennai, December 16

Prior to the series there had been only four instances in Test history of a team losing by an innings having reached 400 in their first innings. Remarkably, England managed it twice in as many weeks.

Karun Nair’s triple-hundred saw India to 759 for seven declared and a lead of 282, and Ravindra Jadeja took seven for 48 as England were bowled out for 207.

AUSTRALIA V ENGLAND, 2017

Lost by 10 wickets, Brisbane, November 23

Ashes rookies Mark Stoneman, James Vince and Dawid Malan made half-centuries but England could only manage 302, conceding a first-innings deficit after Steve Smith’s ton. England’s second innings subsided to 195 all out and David Warner and Cameron Bancroft knocked off the 170 runs required.

Lost by 120 runs, Adelaide, December 2

Shaun Marsh’s 126 led Australia to 442 for eight declared and a first-innings lead of 115 in bowler-friendly conditions under floodlights. England fought back, routing their hosts for 138 second time around and closing day four on 176 for four, needing another 178, but were blown away by Mitchell Starc (five for 88).

Lost by an innings and 41 runs, Perth, December 14

Centuries from Malan and Jonny Bairstow saw England to 403 but as in India 12 months previously, it was not enough to take the game into a fourth innings. Smith (239) and Mitchell Marsh (181) powered Australia to 662 for nine declared and England were bowled out for 218, with Josh Hazlewood taking five for 48.
