Sri Lanka will host India in a full tour that will consist of three Tests, five ODIs and a one-off T20I with the first Test scheduled to begin on July 26.

The previous Test series between the two sides was in 2015 which was won by India. Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, they came back after losing the first Test to win the series 2-1 to register their first Test series victory in Sri Lanka since 1993.

When it comes to the ICC Test rankings, going into the series, India are ranked No. 1 with 123 rating points while Sri Lanka are seventh with 92 rating points.

If India win the series, they are guaranteed to remain at the top of the rankings, but if they fail to be victorious, South Africa have a chance to go to the top depending on their series result against England.

If India draw the series against Sri Lanka, then the Proteas can become the top-ranked team if they beat England 3-1. If Faf du Plessis’ men defeat England 2-1, then they would require India to lose against Sri Lanka by a 2-0 margin if they have to go to the number one position.

If the England-South Africa series is drawn, then India can lose the top ranking only if they get whitewashed by Sri Lanka.

Here is how the varying scenarios in the Sri Lanka-India Test series will have an impact on the two teams in the ICC Test rankings.

If Sri Lanka win 1-0: India – 116, Sri Lanka – 98

If Sri Lanka win 2-0: India – 115, Sri Lanka – 99

If Sri Lanka win 3-0: India -114, Sri Lanka – 101

If Sri Lanka win 2-1: India – 116, Sri Lanka – 98

If series is drawn 0-0: India – 119, Sri Lanka – 95

If series is drawn 1-1: India – 119, Sri Lanka – 95

If India win 1-0: India – 122, Sri Lanka – 92

If India win 2-0: India – 123, Sri Lanka – 91

If India win 3-0: India – 125, Sri Lanka – 90

If India win 2-1: India – 122, Sri Lanka – 92
