England got a taste of what was to come in the future when West Indies’ Brian Lara scored a magnificent 375 in the fifth Test match – then the highest score ever in Test cricket surpassing the previous record of Sir Garfield Sobers, set in 1958 (365 not out).

Almost 10 years later at the same ground in Antigua, Lara became the first and only batsman to score a quadruple hundred (400 not out).

Lara’s 375 in the first innings, which included 45 boundaries, set up a draw and West Indies won the series 3-1. He batted 766 minutes and faced 538 balls in the marathon knock.

The hosts were 12-2 at one stage, but reached 593 for five declared.

It was a quite incredible knock that on April 18, 2017 now celebrates its 23rd anniversary.
