India opener KL Rahul has had a good series with the bat against Australia, scoring five half-centuries in six innings, but admitted that he is disappointed at his inability to convert those knocks into big scores.

In fact, before the start of the series, Rahul’s career was often described as feast-or-famine by many observers as he tended to either get out for a low score or go on to get a century.

Over the last month, the 24-year-old has added consistency to his game, but a century has eluded him. On Sunday, he looked good to get a big score but lost his wicket after playing a loose shot against Pat Cummins.

“Not regretting anything but a little disappointed that I haven’t been able to convert the starts into big runs for my team,” said Rahul in the press conference at the end of day’s play.

“As an opening batsman, it’s my responsibility to spend as much time in the middle as I can and try and get big scores in the first innings so that we don’t have to bat in the second innings.”

In the morning session, Rahul showed a great deal of patience to bat out some hostile bowling from Australian pacers Josh Hazlewood and Cummins, and the Karnataka batsman mentioned that it was the toughest session he has faced in Test cricket so far.

“Josh and Cummins in the first session, I can say has been the toughest session that I have faced in Test cricket so far. They put the ball in the right areas, they swung the ball, they bowled with a lot of pace and a lot of venom,” he said.
