Adam Gilchrist, Michael Vaughan hail Steve Smith after Australian skipper’s ton in Ranchi

Australia took the upper hand on day one of the third Test against India, thanks to an unbeaten 159-run partnership between captain Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell.

At the end of day’s play, the visitors were 299/4 after Smith scored his 19th Test ton and Maxwell brought up his first half-century in Test cricket.

On Twitter, former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist called Smith a “legend” while former pacer Mitchell Johnson called it an “outstanding day [for Australia]”.

Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle, on the other hand, feels that India require a special batting performance to come back into this match.
