During his knock of 83, Pujara crossed Chandra Borde’s mark of 1604 runs from the 1964-65 season. Interestingly, Pujara is also third on the list, having amassed 1585 runs during the 2012-13 campaign.

In the build-up to the current season, there were question marks over the Saurashtra batsman’s place in the Test team after a series of inconsistent performances over the previous two years.

PUJARA IN 2016-17 INDIAN FC SEASON

  • Matches: 21
  • Runs: 1605
  • Average: 89.16
  • Centuries: 6

Pujara answered his critics in style during the Duleep Trophy in August and hasn’t looked back since. The 29-year-old has notched up as many as six centuries this season, which includes a top score of 256 not out in the Duleep Trophy final.

After the Test against the Tigers, India will play Australia over four Tests, which could see Pujara build a record that will be very difficult to break.
