On Wednesday, Hashim Amla’s dismissal at the hands of Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Pradeep was the 10,000th leg-before-wicket (LBW) dismissal in Test cricket.
Looking back at the list of batsmen who were trapped LBW the most number of times, it’s no surprise that we find Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar at the top, simply because he played the most number of Test matches by quite a distance.
The Mumbai maestro was out LBW on 63 occasions, which included being dismissed in the particular mode of dismissal in both innings of a match 12 times.
Former West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul is second on the list, having been trapped in front of the stumps 55 times during his illustrious Test career.
The only active player in the top five is England captain Alastair Cook. Considering he’s still only 32, there’s a good chance that the England opener could be at the top of the list when he retires.
The first batsman to be dismissed LBW was England’s George Ulyett, who fell victim to Australia’s Nat Thomson in the first ever Test match played in 1877.
Here, we look at five batsmen who were dismissed most times for LBW in Test cricket.
Batsman | Team | LBWs |
---|---|---|
Sachin Tendulkar | India | 63 |
Shivnarine Chanderpaul | West Indies | 55 |
Graham Gooch | England | 50 |
Alastair Cook | England | 47 |
