World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev has backed MS Dhoni as the captain of the Indian team in the limited overs formats of the game.

Recently, with India’s exceptional performances in the Test arena under Virat Kohli, there have been suggestions that the Delhi batsman should take over as captain in the shorter formats of the game as well.

Rated as one of the finest batsmen in the history of the one-day game, Dhoni has had a very poor 2016 by his standards. In 13 ODIs, the Indian LOI skipper has scored 278 runs at an average of 27.80 with just one fifty to his name.

Kapil Dev, though, feels that with the experience Dhoni has, it is important for him to continue captaining the side.

“I think the answer people should look for is are we ready to ask Dhoni to take a back seat. It is more important. I think if he is good enough he should carry on. When the time will come Dhoni may quit all three formats,” Kapil said.

“I think at the moment it is very important Dhoni is doing a good job. I think he has enough experience and he should continue.”

Kapil Dev and Dhoni are the only two Indian captains to have won the World Cup.
