India will soon be home to the largest cricket stadium in the world with the Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium, also commonly known as the Motera Stadium, all set to be expanded to a capacity of 110,000.

Once the work is completed, the stadium will overtake the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as the cricket venue with the highest capacity for spectators. The MCG can currently hold 100,024 people and was the venue for the ICC Cricket World Cup final in 2015.

The construction work with regards to the expansion of the Motera Stadium will be undertaken by India-based company Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and is expected to be completed within two years.

“The ground is ready to be handed over to the construction company. The new stadium, when completed, will be the largest cricket stadium in the world which will be made to meet all the latest the international standards,” read a press release from the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA).

The Motera can currently hold upto 54,000 people and has hosted 12 Test matches till date. It also played host to the famous World Cup quarterfinal between India and Australia in 2012 – a match which was won by India, who would later go on to lift the prestigious trophy on home soil.
