Leg-spinner Poonam Yadav picked up three wickets as India started their campaign in the 2016 Women’s T20 Asia Cup with a 64-run win over Bangladesh in Bangkok on Saturday.

After being put into bat first, the Indian opening partnership of Mithali Raj and Smriti Mandhana notched up 70 runs for the first wicket. Mandhana showed exactly why she has been signed up by Brisbane Heat for the second edition of the WBBL with an attacking knock of 41, which came from just 32 deliveries.

Raj was also in fine touch, top scoring and staying unbeaten on 49 as India finished their innings on 118/6. She was later named the Player of the Match for her efforts.

Off-spinner Khadija Tul Kubra was Bangladesh’s most impressive bowler, claiming two wickets for 12 runs from her four overs.

In reply, Bangladesh were never in the game after losing opening batter Nigar Sultana for a duck in the first over of the chase. Only two of Bangladesh’s batters got to double digits as they were bowled out for 54.

India will play hosts Thailand in their next match on Sunday.

India 118/6 [Raj 49*, Mandhana 41, Kubra 2/12] beat Bangladesh [Sharmin 18, Poonam 3/13, Anuja Patil 2/7]
