Though England’s men side have never won a Cricket World Cup, the women’s team picked up their third on this day in 2009, beating New Zealand by four wickets in Sydney, Australia.

After winning the toss, New Zealand elected to bat, but were bowled out in 47.2 overs for a total of 166. England’s Nicky Shaw, who replaced Jenny Gunn minutes before the contest, took a career-best 4 for 34 with the ball, then added 17 with the bat to earn Player of the Match.

The victors would comfortably reach their winning total with 23 balls to spare for their first title in 16 years.

Claire Taylor was named Player of the Series for her 324 runs.

Here’s what other memorable events happened on this day:

1967: Muhammad Ali knocks out Zora Folley in the seventh round for the heavyweight boxing title.

1972: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is named the NBA’s MVP.

1989: Pete Rozelle announces his retirement as NFL commissioner after serving for 29 years.

1992: England defeat South Africa in a rain-shortened semi-final in the Cricket World Cup.
