Surrey completed a hat-trick at the Cricket Writers’ Club annual awards, with Sam Curran, Rory Burns and Nat Sciver all landing trophies.

Curran claimed the prestigious CWC young cricketer of the year prize, having helped the Brown Caps to their first County Championship title in 16 years and made a big impression on England’s Test side.

The 20-year-old, whose elder brother Tom topped the poll in 2015, was not present to collect his trophy in person having already departed for the forthcoming one-day series in Sri Lanka.

Previous winners of the young cricketer award, available to England-qualified players aged under 23 at the start of the season, have gone on to earn more than 2,500 Test caps.

Current captain Joe Root, record run-scorer Alastair Cook and leading wicket-taker James Anderson all take their place in that list.

Burns, Surrey’s title-winning captain and the leading run-scorer in Division One, was named County Championship player of the year.

It continued a run of good news for the 28-year-old opener, who earned a first Test call-up for the three-match series in Sri Lanka.

Sciver was also rewarded for leading Surrey Stars to the Kia Super League title with the women’s cricket award.
